14 years ago 4 guys, Doug, Matt, Mike & Craig, registered for their first MS150 Cycle to the Shore ride, and cleverly named themselves Team DMC.
After a sponsorship with a local bike shop fell through, they were left without jerseys the night before the ride. Scrambling to find anything that matched, they found 4 jerseys, each one a different type of beer, Dos Equis, Corona, Tecate, and Sol.
As they made their way down to Daytona during the ride, they’d periodically hear: “Hey there are the beer guys”, by the end of day 1 of this two-day ride, it quickly progressed to “there’s the Spanish beer guys” leading to the ah-ha moment when someone said “there goes the Spanish beer team”. Right then and there, the name Team Spanish Beer was born. Essentially, our team name came from the community and other cyclists from the MS150.
A few years later, we attempted to change our team name, only to find out the crew at the North Florida Chapter of the National MS Society did not approve. Everyone loves how Team Spanish Beer originated and politely denied our request to change names.
2018 marks our ten year anniversary of being a team and participating in the MS150 ride.
What started as a fun outing for the original cyclists, quickly turned into riding for a cause. With many riders having ties to friends, family, and loved ones with MS, we kept setting a new goal for ourselves. Over the past 10 years, Team Spanish Beer has grown from the original 4 guys to a team of more than 30 cyclists. Together we have raised more than $90,000 in an effort to help create a world free of MS.
